The BMX season is about to get underway with the first KZN race scheduled for the 20th February. The sport has seen an impressive revival in recent years, and 2011 looks set to be another great year of growth as the number of riders continue to increase. There is nothing more exciting for a youngster then lining up in a start gate, waiting for the green light to flash and the gate to drop. For the next minute, everything outside of the track does not exist, it's just the rider and seven other competitors on the track. Survival instincts kick in, evasive maneuvers and bursts of acceleration come automatically as each rider gives their all with the finish line in sight. It truly is a sight to behold.
BMX racing is open to both male and females of all ages and youngsters can even start from the age of 5 years and up with riders riding well into their 30's and 40's! New riders start in novice classes, and progress over time according to their results into expert class, then later depending on age and results into the highest level called Elites.
BMX racing is excellent for improving power, performance and developing balance and skill and the sport is often the breeding ground for the other cycling disciplines such as mountain biking.
